How to Stay Motivated to Reach Your Goals!
Getting back to your normal routine can be hard now that summer is over. Not only do we have more responsibilities on our plate, but a summer’s worth of holidays, grill outs, and lake days may have caught up with you as well!
So, how should you go about getting back into the swing of a healthy diet and exercise plan? There are three key things to keep in mind.
You must set appropriate goals, recruit accountability, and develop a proper plan.
So, how should you go about getting back into the swing of a healthy diet and exercise plan? There are three key things to keep in mind.
You must set appropriate goals, recruit accountability, and develop a proper plan.
Goal Setting
When it comes to achieving your goals, it’s important that you start out with the right intention. If you don’t have a clear sense of direction and aim, you will struggle to make progress, and to feel a sense of fulfillment. If your goal is always to lose weight but you never quantify it, you run the risk of never being satisfied.
When setting goals around your health and fitness, it’s helpful to use these constraints:
- Get specific with your goals. You should have a clear vision of what success looks like. For example “lose weight” is not as helpful “lose 5% body fat” and “get stronger” is not as helpful as “squat 200 pounds 5 times.”
- Try setting one physical (ex. Body-fat percentage or muscle mass) goal, and one performance (ex. Personal best mile time, most weight lifted in an exercise) goal.
- Make your goals time-sensitive, but adaptable. Set deadlines in order to add some urgency to your goals, but make sure not to set unrealistic expectations. Life has its ups and downs. Progress towards your goals will too. Remember that the aim is to improve little by little. Progress can be slow at times, but don’t let it stop or reverse!
- Over time, your goals should be helping you achieve healthier habits. Sustainable goals are key. Make the habits that help you towards your goals part of your overall system so that you can keep results over time.
So, your goals should be: specific, time-sensitive, adaptable, and sustainable in order to keep you motivated!

Accountability
We all know the power of a good workout buddy. Recruit a friend or family member to join you if you’re struggling to develop good diet and exercise habits on your own. This will make things more enjoyable, and add an extra layer of motivation not to let the other person down!
At Nutrishop, Ultimate Workout, and Todd Smith Fitness, we are more than happy to offer the accountability you need. Feel free to ask one of our nutrition consultants, instructors or personal trainers how they can help keep you accountable and motivated!
Another great way to create accountability is to keep a checklist for habits you are working on, or daily steps toward goals. A checklist provides a great visual reminder. Other visual reminders like a statement of your goal, or a motivational picture or quote can motivate you to be consistent as well!
The Right Plan
Lastly, the only way to truly get the results you desire is to have a well formulated plan. We all know we need to “eat healthy” but what does this mean in the context of your individual life? How do you balance exercise with rest and recovery? What is a reasonable timeline to reach your unique goals?
These are all questions that the experts at Nutrishop, Ultimate Workout, and Todd Smith Fitness can help you answer! Know beyond a doubt that you have the right strategies and tools to reach your goals and stay motivated by asking us how to eat and train for your body type and lifestyle. We are always here to help and offer encouragement!
